Product Description

FOX EPOCOTE® FS190 is a two-component, solvent-free, waterproof topcoat coating material consisting of epoxy resin (Component A) and epoxy hardener (Component B). It is used for the protection of concrete and steel (metal) surfaces against chemicals, water, seawater, hard water, and sulfates. Thanks to its antibacterial properties, it forms a smooth, glossy surface that prevents the growth of bacteria and microbes. It meets the requirements of Principles 1.3, 2.2, 5.1, and 8.2 of the TS EN 1504-2 standard. It is documented with carbon dioxide permeability Sd>50 m, water vapour transmission class III (Sd≥50 m), capillary water absorption W<0.1 kg/(m²·h⁰·⁵), and adhesion strength ≥2.0 N/mm². Fire Reaction Class is E.

Application Steps

    Surface Preparation – Concrete

    Cement-based surfaces in contact with water must be sound, dry, dust-free, and clean. The surface must be free of oil, grease, rust, and paraffin residues, and loose particles must be removed. Iron and wooden plugs on the surface must be removed, and active water leaks must be sealed with FOX PLUG FC340. Existing voids, uneven surfaces, and corners and edges (chamfer of at least 4 cm) must be filled with FOX MORTAR FC188 T repair mortar.

    Surface Preparation – Steel

    The surface must be thoroughly cleaned of oil, grease, and rust residues, and an appropriate surface profile achieved by sandblasting. Where sandblasting is not possible, a pneumatic needle scaler or cup wire brush should be used. Degreasers may be used on oily surfaces. FOX EPOCOTE® FS190 must be applied immediately after cleaning to prevent the surface from corroding again.

    Mixing

    Component B is slowly added into Component A and mixed with an electric mixer at 400–600 rpm for 3–5 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. After resting for approximately 3–4 minutes and mixing again for 30 seconds, the product is ready for use. Pot life is 45 minutes.

    Application – Coating

    FOX EPOCOTE® FS190 can be applied with a mohair roller or a special spray machine. Two coats must be applied to achieve a complete coating. The best practice is to apply the second coat while the first coat is still wet. If the interval between coats exceeds 24 hours, the surface must be abraded.

  5. 5

    Topcoat (Maintenance/Repair)

    When recoating is required due to damage or other reasons, the area to be treated must be abraded with a wire brush or sandpaper to provide adequate mechanical adhesion. Unsound coating must be completely removed and the process carried out as if applying for the first time.

  6. 6

    Tool Cleaning

    After application, tools and equipment used must be cleaned with solvent. Once FOX EPOCOTE® FS190 has cured, it can only be removed from surfaces by mechanical means.

Critical

Ambient and surface temperature must be a minimum of +5°C and a maximum of +30°C. Concrete surfaces must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application.

After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. If water contact occurs, softening and blistering will develop on the coating, causing it to lose its properties; in this case, the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.

Mixing must be carried out using an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm with the specified epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing tip. Otherwise, air bubbles will form on the coating.

If the interval between coats exceeds 24 hours, the surface must be abraded.

Important

For water tanks, vibrating floors, and surfaces expected to deflect, it is recommended to use FOX MULTISEAL® FS478 or FOX MULTISEAL® UV FS475 before applying FOX EPOCOTE® FS190.

When spray application is preferred, the Technical Service department should be contacted.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions. In cold weather, packaging should be kept at +20°C – +25°C until ready for use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals, and insects must be prevented from entering the application area while the coating is still fresh.

Information

The product has limited UV resistance.

Critical

Approaching storage and application areas with open flames is dangerous; areas must be ventilated. Work clothing, protective gloves, goggles, and a mask must be worn during application. Contact with skin and eyes should be avoided; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap. If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Important

The product must be stored in its original unopened packaging, in a cool and dry environment, protected from frost, between +5°C and +30°C. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.

Information

Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and surface temperature of 20°C. It should be noted that consumption will increase on damaged surfaces and in cold weather conditions.
