Product Description

FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT is a two-component, epoxy resin-based, solvent-free, self-levelling coloured industrial floor coating with high chemical resistance. The product is prepared by mixing component A (epoxy base containing pigment and filler) with component B (hardener) in the specified ratios. It is applied at a recommended coating thickness of 1.0 mm to 3.0 mm. At +23°C, the pot life is 30–35 minutes; after 7 days it achieves a full Shore D hardness of ≥85 and a compressive strength of ≥65 N/mm². The surface is spread with a notched trowel and air bubbles are removed with a spike roller.

Application Steps

    Surface Preparation

    The concrete substrate to be coated must be opened to an open-pore surface using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling or diamond grinding to remove the cement laitance. Weak concrete sections must be removed, small voids and holes must be fully opened, and the resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. For substrate repair, void filling and levelling, a mortar prepared by mixing 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) quartz sand with FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER series primer should be used.

    Checking Application Conditions

    The surface moisture content must be below 4% (CM measurement or oven-drying method). There must be no rising damp according to ASTM. Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%. Surface, ambient and material temperatures must be within the range of minimum +10°C and maximum +30°C; the substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.

    Priming

    Before application, a FOX EPOTHANE® series primer appropriate to the surface condition must be applied to the floor surface. Ensure that the substrate temperature is a minimum of +10°C, and proceed with the application of FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT over the primer within the specified overcoat time.

    Mixing

    Before mixing, ensure that product temperatures are between +20°C and +25°C. Component A must be thoroughly mixed with an electric mixer until a homogeneous colour is achieved and no product remains on the bottom or sides of the container. After component B has been fully added to component A, mix for at least 3 minutes until a homogeneous blend is obtained. Then add the required amount of 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand according to the system to be applied and mix for a further 2 minutes. Use an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Avoid over-mixing to minimise air entrainment.

    Coating Application

    FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT is poured onto the surface and applied evenly with a notched trowel. Once the coating reaches the appropriate consistency, a spike roller must be applied to remove air bubbles. If the spike roller is applied too late, spike roller marks may remain on the surface. If the floor surface is homogeneous and void-free, spike rolling is not necessary.

    Tool and Equipment Cleaning

    After application, tools and equipment used must be cleaned with solvent or epoxy thinner. Once FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.

The surface temperature must be a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C. Ambient and material temperatures must also be kept within the same range.

After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. Contact with water will cause softening and blistering of the coating, resulting in loss of coating properties; the coating will need to be completely removed and reapplied.

The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. Condensation and dew formation must be avoided, as this will damage the coating.

Before mixing, ensure that product temperatures are between +20°C and +25°C. Components A and B must be mixed for at least 3 minutes, and after adding silica sand, for a further 2 minutes using an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm.

If the specified epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle is not used during mixing, air will be entrained into the product and air bubbles will form on the coating surface.

Important

Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. A vapour barrier layer must be installed in slabs laid on ground.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather, ambient and substrate temperatures should be raised; products should be conditioned at +20°C – +25°C before use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.

Important

If the surface is exposed to chemicals, it must be cleaned within a maximum of 1 hour.

Important

The product must be stored in its original unopened packaging, in a cool and dry environment, protected from frost, between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.

Critical

It is dangerous to approach storage and application areas with open flames; these areas must be ventilated. Work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap. If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Information

The consumption figures stated in the technical document are given for +23°C and 50% relative humidity. Actual consumption may vary depending on surface texture and ambient temperature; it should be noted that consumption will increase on uneven surfaces and in cold weather conditions.
