Product Description

FOX PURMAX® MASTIC PRIMER FP710 is a polyurethane prepolymer solvent-based, single-component, moisture-curing, low-viscosity, transparent and deep-penetrating liquid primer. With a density of 0.98 gr/cm³, the product is used for substrate preparation prior to polyurethane-based expansion joint mastics and polyurethane mastic applications, primarily FOX PURMAX® MASTIC. It provides excellent penetration and adhesion on mineral surfaces such as concrete, porous concrete, brick, stone and marble, as well as on absorbent substrates such as cement-based plaster and gypsum plaster. After application to the surface, it dries within 4–6 hours; final curing is completed within 4 days. Bond strength has been measured at 2.2 N/mm² to concrete according to ASTM D 903. It has a shelf life of 6 months from the date of manufacture at room temperature.

Advantages

  • Easy to apply.
  • Frost-resistant.
  • Improves surface condition, providing excellent and long-lasting adhesion.
  • Provides excellent adhesion on permanently submerged surfaces.
  • Penetrates absorbent surfaces excellently thanks to its low viscosity.
  • Has the elasticity to accommodate surface movements.

Usage Areas

  • Particularly prior to polyurethane-based expansion joint mastics and polyurethane mastics such as FOX PURMAX® MASTIC
  • On surfaces such as concrete, porous concrete, brick, stone and marble
  • Used as a primer on absorbent surfaces such as cement-based plaster and gypsum plaster

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

In expansion joints, the inner and outer surfaces must be sound, dry, load-bearing, dust-free and clean, as well as level and even. They must be thoroughly cleaned of oil, grease, rust and paraffin residues; loose particles must be removed. Surface defects should be repaired with FOX EPOMORTAR FC510.

  2. 2

    Masking and Polyethylene Backer Rod

The outer edges of the joints whose surface preparation has been completed must be protected with masking tape of appropriate width. A polyethylene backer rod must then be placed inside the joint to prevent the mastic from bonding to the back surface and to keep mastic consumption in line with the intended joint design. A polyethylene backer rod 5 mm wider in diameter than the joint width is compressed and placed inside the joint; the insertion depth should be half the joint width.

  3. 3

    Primer Application

The concrete surfaces of the joint must be primed with FOX PURMAX® MASTIC PRIMER FP710 using a suitable brush. Primer must not be applied to the surface of the polyethylene backer rod. Mastic application may proceed once the primer has reached a tack-free/dry-to-touch state (when the primer surface is touched with a finger, the material should not stick to the finger, but a fingerprint should remain on the primer surface).

  4. 4

    Mastic Application Timing

Mastic application to surfaces primed with FOX PURMAX® MASTIC PRIMER FP710 must be carried out the following day. If this period has elapsed, the primer application must be repeated.

  5. 5

    Cleaning of Tools

Tools and equipment should first be cleaned with paper towels, then wiped with solvent. Do not attempt to clean used rollers and brushes; they cannot be reused.

Critical

If the application temperature is below +5°C or above +40°C, suitable temperatures must be awaited.

Critical

Mastic application must be carried out the following day after primer application. If this period has elapsed, the primer application must be repeated.

Critical

Beware of dew and condensation! The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.

Important

FOX PURMAX® series primers may cause colour variations on granite, marble, natural stone and artificial composites due to their high penetration properties. During application, the primer must not be spread outside the joint.

Important

Primer must not be applied to the surface of the polyethylene backer rod.

Important

Tools and equipment should first be cleaned with paper towels, then wiped with solvent. Rollers and brushes used cannot be reused.

Critical

It is dangerous to approach storage and application areas with open flame; these areas must be ventilated.

Critical

Work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap. In case of ingestion, consult a doctor immediately.

Important

The product must be stored in its original unopened packaging, in a cool and dry environment, protected from frost, between +5°C and +30°C. Shelf life is 6 months from the date of manufacture.

Information

For short-term storage, a maximum of 2 pallets may be stacked on top of each other, and shipment must follow a first-in, first-out system. For long-term storage, pallets must not be stacked on top of each other.

Important

Food and beverages must not be brought into application areas. Store out of reach of children.

Information

The technical values above are given at +23°C and 50% relative humidity. Higher temperatures shorten the time; lower temperatures extend it.
