FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER WA is an epoxy-based, two-component, low-viscosity, solvent-free, transparent primer set developed specifically for glossy and glazed surfaces. It can be safely applied on ceramic, marble, granite, glazed surfaces as well as cold-rolled steel sheet, galvanised sheet, stainless steel sheet and steel surfaces. It can be used as a primer before epoxy and polyurethane coatings, and can also be blended with silica sand to produce a repair and filler mortar. It is the preferred primer under FOX EPOTHANE® and FOX PURATHANE® series floor coatings as well as FOX PURMAX® series waterproofing coatings. Its density is 1.10±0.05 gr/cm³, total solids content is 100%, and the product is applied without thinning. At +23°C and 50% relative humidity, the working time is 35–40 minutes.

Application Steps

Surface Preparation
Concrete substrates must be opened to a porous surface by removing the cement laitance using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling or diamond grinding. Weak concrete fragments must be removed, small voids and holes must be fully opened, and the resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. For substrate repairs and filling of voids, a mortar prepared by mixing 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) quartz sand with FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER WA should be used to prepare the surface. Concrete compressive strength must be at least 25 N/mm², tensile strength at least 1.5 N/mm², moisture content a maximum of 4%, and surface temperature a minimum of +10°C.

Checking Application Conditions
Surface moisture content must be below 4% (should be tested by CM measurement or oven-drying method). There must be no rising damp according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test). Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%. Surface temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. Surface, ambient and material temperature must be between +10°C and +30°C.

Mixing
Before starting mixing, it should be verified that product temperatures are between +10°C and +30°C. Component A (FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER WA) is mixed for 1 minute with a suitable mixer without entraining air. Component B is then poured onto Component A and mixed continuously for 2 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. If required, after Components A and B are mixed, 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand or other fillers may be added and mixed for a further 2 minutes. Mixer speed should be 300–400 rpm; over-mixing should be avoided to minimise air entrainment.

Application as a Primer
FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER WA is applied by roller, trowel or zero-notch squeegee. It must be ensured that the application is void-free and covers the entire surface. A second coat may be applied if required depending on surface condition. If an epoxy or polyurethane coating is to be applied over it, 40–45 AFS (0.3–0.5 mm) silica sand may be broadcast onto the material while it is still wet.

Application as a Surface Levelling Primer
When rough surfaces need to be levelled prior to epoxy/polyurethane floor coating, a mixture of FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER WA and 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand is applied by scraping with a zero-notch squeegee at the required thickness according to the surface roughness.

Tool Cleaning
After application, tools and equipment used can be cleaned with solvent. Once FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER WA has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.

The temperature of the surface to be applied and the ambient temperature must be between a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C.

After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. If water contact occurs, softening and blistering will develop on the coating; the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.

Surface moisture content must be below 4%. There must be no rising damp according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test).

Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%. Attention must be paid to dew point and condensation.

Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Otherwise, air will be entrained into the product, causing air bubbles on the coating.

Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application.

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather, to improve workability, packaging should be conditioned at +20°C – +25°C before use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.

The product must not be thinned.

Approaching storage and application areas with open flames is dangerous; areas must be adequately ventilated.

During application, appropriate work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations must be worn.

The product must not come into contact with skin or eyes. In case of contact, wash thoroughly with water and soap; if swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

The product must be stored out of reach of children.

Important

Store between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight, in a cool and dry environment, protected from frost. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.

Information

Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and surface temperature of 20°C; it should be noted that consumption will increase on uneven surfaces and in cold weather conditions.

Information

Chemical resistance tests were carried out at room temperature. Elevated temperatures and/or chemical mixtures may affect resistance; colour changes may occur due to the effect of chemicals.
