Product Description
FOX ASPARTHANE® PRIMER is a polyaspartic-based, two-component, low-viscosity, fast-curing, transparent primer set. It provides excellent adhesion to substrates for polyaspartic, epoxy, and polyurethane-based coatings. Thanks to its aliphatic structure, it can be used both indoors and outdoors. The next coat can be applied approximately 1 hour after application, accelerating work processes. With 100% solid content, liquid impermeability, and high chemical resistance, it is preferred as the primary primer in industrial floor systems. It is compatible with FOX ASPARTHANE®, FOX EPOTHANE®, and FOX PURATHANE® floor coating systems and can also be used as a primer coat in FOX PURMAX® polyurethane waterproofing coatings. It can also be blended with silica sand and applied as a repair and filling mortar.
Advantages
- It is an aliphatic primer.
- Suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
- High chemical and mechanical resistance.
- Easy to apply.
- Excellent surface adhesion.
- Liquid-impermeable.
- Non-slip surface can be achieved.
- Fast-setting (next coat can be applied approximately 1 hour later).
- Low viscosity.
- High bond strength.
Usage Areas
- As a primer before polyaspartic, epoxy, and polyurethane-based coatings
- As a bonding agent for polyaspartic-based levelling mortars and screeds
- Mixed with an appropriate quantity of silica sand as a repair and filling mortar
- As a primer under FOX ASPARTHANE® series polyaspartic-based floor coatings
- As a primer under FOX EPOTHANE® series epoxy floor coatings
- As a primer under FOX PURATHANE® series polyurethane floor coatings
- As a primer under FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane waterproofing coatings
Application Steps
- 1
Surface Preparation
Concrete substrates must be treated with abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling, or diamond grinding to remove laitance and achieve an open-pored surface. Weak concrete particles must be removed, and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. To fill voids and level the surface, a mortar prepared by mixing FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER with 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand should be used.
- 2
Checking Application Conditions
Surface moisture content must be confirmed to be below 4% by CM measurement or oven-drying method. The absence of rising moisture must be verified using the ASTM polyethylene sheet test. Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 60%, and surface and ambient temperature must be between +10°C and +30°C. To guard against dew point and condensation risk, the floor temperature must be kept at least +3°C above the dew point.
- 3
Mixing
Before starting mixing, check that the product temperatures are between +15°C and +25°C. Component A must be mixed with a suitable mixer for 2 minutes without entraining air, then Component B must be poured onto Component A. Mix with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle for 2 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Avoid over-mixing to prevent air entrainment.
- 4
Application
Once the mixture is prepared, FOX ASPARTHANE® PRIMER should be applied by roller, trowel, or squeegee. Ensure that the application covers the entire surface without voids. If required depending on surface condition, two coats of primer should be applied. Pot life is approximately 20 minutes, and the next coat can be applied approximately 45 minutes later.
- 5
Tool and Equipment Cleaning
After application, tools and equipment used must be cleaned immediately with solvent. Once FOX ASPARTHANE® PRIMER has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.
The concrete surface must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application, and the ambient and surface temperature must be at least +10°C and no more than +25°C.
Surface moisture content must be below 4%. Test method: CM measurement or oven-drying method.
There must be no rising moisture according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test).
Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 60%.
After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. If water contact occurs, the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.
Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Otherwise, air bubbles will form on the coating.
Attention must be paid to dew point and condensation. If condensation forms on the primer, it must be dried with a dry mop.
Before starting mixing, ensure that the product temperatures are between +15°C and +25°C.
Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.
In cold weather, the ambient and floor temperature should be raised; products should be kept at +20°C–25°C until ready for use.
Rain, dust, wind, animals, and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.
Approaching storage and application areas with open flames is dangerous; areas must be ventilated.
Protective clothing, gloves, goggles, and a mask must be worn during application. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap. If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.
Store out of reach of children. Food and beverages must not be brought into application areas.
Store in the original unopened packaging in a cool, dry place, protected from frost. Shelf life is 6 months from the date of manufacture (+10°C–+25°C, away from direct sunlight).
For short-term storage, stack no more than 2 pallets high and apply a first-in, first-out dispatch system. For long-term storage, pallets must not be stacked on top of each other.
Technical values are given at +23°C and 50% relative humidity. Higher temperatures shorten the times; lower temperatures extend them.
