Product Description
FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER SL is an epoxy-based, two-component, low-viscosity, solvent-based, transparent primer set. It is used as a primer on non-porous concrete and non-absorbent surfaces, highly porous substrates, and asphalt and bitumen membrane surfaces. It is applied as a primer coat beneath epoxy and polyurethane coatings, including FOX EPOTHANE® series epoxy floor coatings, FOX PURATHANE® series polyurethane floor coatings, and FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane waterproofing coatings. With its high chemical and mechanical resistance, excellent surface adhesion and low viscosity, it is an indispensable surface preparation product for floor coating systems. The total solids content is 100% and it must not be thinned. At +23°C and 50% relative humidity, the product offers a pot life of 35–40 minutes and a curing time of 12–24 hours.

Application Steps
- 1
Surface Preparation
The concrete substrates to be coated must be prepared using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling or diamond grinding to remove the cement laitance. Weak concrete fragments must be removed, and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. For floor repair and void filling, a mortar obtained by mixing FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER with 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) quartz sand should be used.
- 2
Checking Application Conditions
The surface moisture content must be below 4% (tested by CM measurement or oven-drying method). There must be no rising moisture according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test). Relative air humidity must not exceed 80%. The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. Surface, ambient and material temperatures must be between a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C.
- 3
Mixing
Verify that product temperatures are between +10°C and +30°C. Component A (FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER SL) is mixed for 1 minute with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm without entraining air. Component B is then poured onto Component A and mixed continuously for 2 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Excessive mixing should be avoided to minimise air entrainment.
- 4
Application as a Primer
FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER SL is applied to the surface void-free using a roller, trowel or zero-notch squeegee. If the product has been absorbed into the surface, the primer application must be repeated.
- 5
Application as a Surface Levelling Primer
On highly porous concrete substrates, FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER SL is applied as the first coat using a roller, trowel or zero-notch squeegee. After the primer has dried, a mixture of FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER and 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand is applied as a skim coat with a zero-notch squeegee at the required thickness depending on surface roughness.
- 6
Tool Cleaning
Tools and equipment used after application must be cleaned with solvent. Once FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER SL has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.
The surface temperature during application must be between a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C. Application must not be carried out outside this range.
The surface moisture content must be below 4%. Rising moisture must not be present according to the ASTM polyethylene sheet test.
After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. In the event of water contact, softening and blistering may occur on the coating; in this case the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.
Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm using the specified epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Otherwise, air bubbles will form in the coating.
Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. A vapour barrier layer must be provided for slabs laid on ground.
Attention must be paid to dew point and condensation. The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.
Relative air humidity must not exceed 80%.
Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions. In cold weather, packaging should be conditioned at +20°C – +25°C before use.
Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.
Once FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER SL has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means; tool cleaning after application must be carried out with solvent.
Open flames near storage and application areas are dangerous; these areas must be ventilated. Protective clothing, gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application. Contact with skin and eyes must be avoided; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap. In case of ingestion, seek medical attention immediately.
The product must be stored between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight, in a cool and dry environment. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.
Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and surface temperature of 20°C. It should be noted that consumption will increase on uneven surfaces and in cold weather conditions.
