FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER is an epoxy-based, two-component, low-viscosity, solvent-free transparent primer. It meets the requirements of principles 1.3, 2.2, 5.1 and 8.2 of TS EN 1504-2:2008; it offers excellent surface adhesion and chemical resistance before epoxy and polyurethane floor coatings.

Product Description

FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER is an epoxy-based, two-component, low-viscosity, solvent-free transparent primer. It meets the requirements of TS EN 1504-2:2008 standard principles 1.3, 2.2, 5.1 and 8.2. The product can be used as a primer before epoxy and polyurethane coatings, as a bonding agent for epoxy-based levelling mortars and screeds, and as a repair and filling mortar when mixed with an appropriate quantity of silica sand. It is applied as a primer under FOX EPOTHANE® series epoxy floor coatings, FOX PURATHANE® series polyurethane floor coatings and FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane waterproofing coatings. The product has a density of 1.07±0.03 gr/cm³, contains 100% solids and cannot be thinned. Adhesion to concrete is ≥2 N/mm² according to EN 1542, and the reaction to fire classification is Class E according to EN 13501-1.

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

    Concrete substrates to be coated must be prepared using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling or diamond grinding to remove the cement laitance and achieve an open-pore surface. Weak concrete sections must be removed and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. For substrate repairs, a mortar obtained from a mixture of 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand and FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER should be used.

    Checking Application Conditions

    Surface moisture content must be below 4% (to be tested by CM measurement or oven-drying method). There must be no rising moisture according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test). Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%. Surface, ambient and material temperatures must be within the range of minimum +10°C and maximum +30°C. Floor temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.

    Mixing

    Before starting to mix, ensure that product temperatures are between +10°C and +30°C. FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER Component A is poured onto Component B. Mix for 2 minutes with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. If required, silica sand or fillers may be added and mixed for a further 2 minutes. Avoid over-mixing to prevent air entrainment.

    Application as a Primer

    FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER is applied by roller, trowel or notched squeegee. Ensure that the application covers the entire surface without voids. If required depending on surface condition, two coats of primer may be applied. If an epoxy or polyurethane coating is to be applied over it, silica sand 40–45 AFS (0.3–0.5 mm) may be broadcast onto the material while it is still wet.

    Application as a Surface Levelling Primer

    A mixture of FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER and silica sand 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) is applied by scraping with a notched squeegee at the required thickness, taking into account the surface roughness.

    Application as a Mortar Coating / Repair Mortar

    A mixture of FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER with silica sand 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm), 40–45 AFS (0.3–0.5 mm) and 15–25 AFS (0.7–1.2 mm) is applied over the still-tacky FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER primer using screed rails. After a short waiting period, the surface is compacted and levelled with a trowel or a PTFE-coated power float (20–90 rpm).

    Cleaning of Tools

    After application, tools and equipment used must be cleaned with solvents such as FOX CS810 or FOX C380. Once FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER has cured, it can only be removed from surfaces by mechanical means.

The concrete substrate to be coated must be at least 3 weeks old.

After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. In the event of water contact, the entire coating must be removed and reapplied.

Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Failure to use the specified mixing paddle will result in air bubbles forming on the coating.

Important

FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER Component A must be poured onto Component B and mixed continuously for 2 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Avoid over-mixing to minimise air entrainment.

Important

Materials should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather, containers should be kept at +20°C–+25°C until ready for use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.

Important

The product must be stored in its original unopened packaging in a dry and cool environment (between +5°C and +30°C), protected from sunlight and frost. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.

Important

Opened containers must be resealed and consumed within 1 week. Pallets must not be stacked on top of each other in storage.

Approaching storage and application areas with open flames is dangerous; areas must be ventilated.

Work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap. If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Important

Food and beverages must not be brought into application areas. Store out of reach of children.

Information

Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and surface temperature of 20°C. It should be noted that consumption will increase on uneven surfaces and in cold weather conditions.

Information

In resin-based systems, pot life and curing times are affected by ambient temperature, floor temperature and air humidity. Curing slows at low temperatures and accelerates at high temperatures.
