Product Description

FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT TERRAZZO is an epoxy resin-based, two-component, solvent-free, self-levelling decorative coating material specially developed for terrazzo systems. Thanks to its high chemical resistance, excellent compressive strength (≥65 N/mm²) and flexural tensile strength (≥30 N/mm²), and strong adhesion to concrete (≥1.5 N/mm²), it provides long-lasting performance on heavily trafficked commercial and industrial floors. Its non-shrinking, 100% solids formulation makes it possible to achieve aesthetic terrazzo surfaces that are easy to apply and require minimal maintenance. When used together with FOX ISO-CRACK EPOXY MEMBRAN SYSTEM, a comprehensive protection system against existing concrete cracks can be established.

Advantages

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

The concrete substrates to be coated must be opened to a porous surface by removing the cement laitance using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling or diamond grinding. Weak concrete fragments and small voids must be fully opened, and the resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. For voids and surface repairs, a mortar prepared from a mixture of 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) quartz sand and EPOTHANE® PRIMER series primer should be used. If undulation is present, it must be corrected by applying the 'FOX SELF LEVELING SCREED FOR REPARING UP TO 5 mm' system.

  2. 2

    ISO-CRACK Epoxy Membrane System Application

To bridge existing concrete cracks and potential cracks, the surface must be coated with 'FOX ISO-CRACK EPOXY MEMBRAN SYSTEM' prior to the application of FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT TERRAZZO. Care must be taken to ensure the substrate temperature is a minimum of +10°C.

  3. 3

    Mixing

Ensure that product temperatures are between +10°C and +30°C. Component A (contains pigment and filler) is mixed with an electric mixer until homogeneous and until no product remains at the bottom or sides of the container. Component B is added entirely to Component A and then mixed for at least 3 minutes. The required amount of aggregate is then added and mixed for a further 2 minutes. Excessive mixing must be avoided to prevent air entrainment. Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle.

  4. 4

    Application

The prepared FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT TERRAZZO mixture is poured onto the surface and applied evenly with a trowel. The surface is levelled with tools such as a screed bar. Diamond and resin pads are then used for grinding until the aggregate/glass and similar materials are exposed.

  5. 5

    Tool and Equipment Cleaning

Tools and equipment used must be cleaned with solvent or epoxy thinner before the application is complete. Once the product has cured, it can only be removed by mechanical means.

Critical

Application and substrate temperature must be a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C. Application must not be carried out outside this range.

Critical

After the application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. In the event of water contact, the coating will soften and blister, losing its properties; in this case the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.

Critical

The concrete substrate must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. A vapour barrier layer must be provided on slabs laid on ground.

Critical

All surfaces to receive the FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT TERRAZZO system must be coated with FOX ISO-CRACK EPOXY MEMBRAN SYSTEM. Substrate temperature (min +10°C) must be strictly observed.

Critical

Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and a suitable epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. If an unsuitable paddle is used, air bubbles will form on the coating.

Critical

Surface moisture content must be below 4%; there must be no rising moisture according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test). Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%.

Important

The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. Precautions must be taken against dew formation and condensation.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather, packaging should be conditioned at +20°C – +25°C to bring the products to a workable state before use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.

Important

In the event of chemical contact, the surface must be cleaned within 1 hour at most. High temperatures and chemical mixtures may adversely affect chemical resistance.

Important

The product must be stored in its original unopened packaging, between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight, in a cool and dry environment, protected from frost. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.

Critical

Approaching storage and application areas with open flames is dangerous; areas must be ventilated. Protective work clothing, gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application. In case of contact with skin or eyes, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap; if swallowed, consult a doctor immediately.

Information

Consumption figures are given for an ambient and surface temperature of +20°C. Consumption may increase on damaged surfaces and in cold weather conditions.

Information

Technical values are given for +23°C and 50% relative humidity. Variations in temperature and humidity affect the working time.
